Tate County is located in the northwestern portion of Mississippi just east of the Delat. Tate County was formed on December 23, 1873 and was named for the Thomas Simpson Tate, a prominent early settler. Famous actor James Earl Jones if from Tate County.
The county seat is Senatobia. Other Tate County communities include: Coldwater, Arkabutla, Looxahoma, Sarah, Savage, Strayhorn, Thyatira, and Tyro. In it's first census in 1880 there were 18,721 residents listed. In the last federal census in 2000 the population was 25,370.
